Karen Dearden Grad Dip Phys MCSP OCPPP
Clinic Director:
Karen graduated in 1989 from Newcastle upon Tyne, after which she worked at Newcastle General Hospital, a large teaching hospital. Karen specialised in Sports Injury Medicine and Musculo-Skeletal Physiotherapy in 1991.
Karen has worked with professional, amateur and recreational athletes. She has been team physiotherapist for Durham County Cricket Club, Newcastle Eagles Basketball team and the Newcastle Elite swimming squad. She has also been involved with Newcastle United Football Team and the Newcastle Falcons rugby team. Over the years she has worked in elite hockey and assisted various international and olympic athletes. Karen also had a part-time lecturing post at Newcastle College working with the Sports Therapy and massage students. She has also advised athletes, coaches and school children on issues surrounding physical preparation and injury.
Karen's work in occupational health includes the assessment and treatment of occupational injuries and their prevention. She has lectured at the North East Occupational Health Conference and to employers and employees around the region. Karen is a member of the Organisation of Chartered Physiotherapists in Occupational Health and Ergonomics.
Karen has attended many post graduate courses and enjoys treating a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions that are seen at the clinic.

Joanne Shields BSc (Hons) MCSP
Senior Physiotherapist:
Joanne graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University in 2003. During her career she has worked within both the NHS and private sector specialising in musculoskeletal conditions.
Through her experience working on both trauma and elective orthopaedic wards, and also various out-patient environments, Joanne has developed a keen interest in post-surgery rehabilitation. Other areas of interest include shoulder rehabilitation and lower limb biomechanical problems.
Having trained in dance of various styles from an early age and progressing to study dance she has a good understanding of the relationship between dance technique and injury. At the Newcastle Sports Injury Clinic, Joanne is working closely with local dance groups, professional companies touring in the region and through links with Dance City provides a screening service for dancers at elite level.
Joanne’s personal interests include a wide variety of sports having spent some time previously working with the sports development team of her local council. She is a keen netball player and competes regularly in the Tyne and Wear ladies league.

Chris Barrett BSc (Hons) MCSP
Senior Physiotherapist: Having graduated in 1998 with a BSc (Hons) in Sports Science from the University of Teesside, Chris went on to complete a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy in 2001. Chris has Over the last few years Chris had been involved in the screening of elite athletes in the region. Chris co-ordinates the provision of physiotherapy via the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS). He sees screening as a great way to identify any issues in advance before they inhibit performance. Whilst working at the Newcastle Sports Injury Clinic, Chris has been involved in a number of elite sporting events including the Nissan Qash qui Challenge (elite freestyle mountain biking) and the Caledonian Challenge (endurance running event). Chris has a wide interest in sport and elite performance; this is particularly the case for running, road cycling and white water canoeing.

Steven Veitch BSc (Hons) MCSP MSOM
Senior Physiotherapist: Steve graduated in 2002 from the University of Teesside, after which he worked at Sunderland Royal hospital. Steve specialised in Orthopaedics musculoskeletal physiotherapy in 2004 and has worked in the private sector since 2007. He has gained extensive experience working in all aspects of musculoskeletal pain and injury and has dealt with a wide variety of work related disorders and sports related injury at recreational, amateur and elite level. Steve has played football at professional and semi professional levels enjoying a spell at Doncaster Rovers and a number of non-league club’s until hanging his boots up in 2006. Steve also has a love of golf and has taken that passion into the professional setting at the clinic. He has developed a golf screening package for all would be golfers and is the clinic specialist in this field. Steve is currently helping golfers of all ages and abilities in reaching their physical potential’s specific to the golf swing to help reduce injury risk, enhance technical development and thus help prolong participation in the sport.

Dave Magee BSc (Hons) MCSP
Senior Physiotherapist: Dave qualified from the University of Teesside in 2004. Since then he has gained experience in a wide range of orthopaedic disorders and management in a variety of settings.
Dave has worked extensively in knee and shoulder rehabilitation and also in patients with chronic back pain. Dave has a personal interest in many sports including football.

Juliet Raine BSc (Hons) MCSP
Senior Physiotherapist: Juliet graduated in 2005 from Northumbria University. She began her career in a
busy teaching hospital in the NHS in Newcastle where she gained opportunities to work in a wide variety of specialties. It was in the NHS that Juliet developed a strong interest in the treatment of acute and long term musculoskeletal problems. She also developed a keen interest in the treatment of children with wide ranging needs.
Over the past few years Juliet has been involved for four seasons with Ponteland RUFC where she was in charge of pitchside management. During this time she developed skills related to the management of acute injuries and rehabilitation of these injuries to participation in contact sports.
Since 2008 Juliet has been conducting ergonomic assessments in a wide range of working environments. She is currently studying for a Masters degree in Ergonomics through Derby University. In the last year she has been responsible for progressing the ergonomic and workplace health services delivered by the clinic. She has a particular interest in the prevention and treatment of common work related disorders and delivers regular training courses relating to this subject.
In 2010 Juliet was part of a team who were awarded a National Training Award for the delivery of training to local businesses which dramatically reduced the absence from work due to musculoskeletal injuries.

Meghan Rashotte BKin (Hons) MSc PT MCSP
Senior Physiotherapist: Meghan graduated from McMaster University in Ontario, Canada with an Meghan enjoys working with patients of all ages, and is dedicated to assisting individuals to reach their optimal level of physical functioning. Meghan has an interest in ergonomics and work related disorders and she conducts workplace assessments in a variety of work environments. Meghan has completed several post-graduate courses to further her education, in areas including soft tissue release, manual therapy, the application of Pilates in rehabilitation, treatment and prevention of running injuries and therapeutic taping. In her spare time Meghan enjoys running, snowboarding, travelling and music.
Honours Bachelor degree in Kinesiology and continued her education to successfully complete her Masters of Science degree in Physical Therapy at Queen's University also in Ontario, Canada. Since graduation Meghan has been working within the private physiotherapy sector and treating patients with a wide variety of musculoskeletal injuries.

Acupuncture
Steve Oliver DIP Ac MBAcC
Traditional Acupuncturist: Steve graduated from the Northern College of Acupuncture in York. Steve is a member of the British Acupuncture Council (www.acupuncture.org.uk). Steve also teaches Tai Cui and Qi Gong, has qualified in Tuina Massage and associated body work and is continuing to expand his knowledge in this field of study.

Acupuncturist:
Susan studied traditional acupuncture, completing a 4 year course at the Northern College of Acupuncture in York. She is a member of the British Acupuncture Council and also has qualifications in massage, reflexology and reiki.

Anna Stokoe BSc (Hons) MSST
Massage Therapist: Having been involved in sport for the majority of her life, Anna decided to pursue a career in the sporting sector. In 2009, Anna graduated from Newcastle College with a Foundation
Degree in Sports Training and Rehabilitation, where she gained qualifications in Swedish and sports massage, Level 2 Fitness Instruction and Level 3 Advanced Fitness Instruction. In 2010 she graduated from Newcastle College with a BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy Top-up accredited by Leeds Metropolitan University and The Society of Sports Therapists.
Anna is a member of The Society of Sports Therapists and also an associate member of the UK Strength and Conditioning Association.
She is currently developing her career further in sports injury rehabilitation, specialising in youth and adolescent injuries and conditions as well as becoming a strength and conditioning coach. At present she is gaining experience as a graduate sports therapist by working with Northumberland F.A. U18's County Team.
Following many years participating in football, Anna now plays hockey, competing in Division A of the North East Women's league for Morpeth Ladies second team. In her spare time she enjoys cycling and trail runnning.

Henrietta Bolton Carter
Massage Therapist: Henrietta trained as a sports and remedial massage therapist at Exeter College in 1996 and went on to do a further Advanced Diploma in Manchester in 2004. Henrietta has over 10 years of experience working in sports centres and local sports clubs, with many different sports people,
particularly runners and cyclists, and has treated a broad range of conditions and injuries. A keen athlete herself, Henrietta understands the frustrations of injury and the impact remedial massage can make on a swifter return to activity. She also has a particular interest in postural problems and the use of myofascial release techniques.

Pilates
Claire Barnaby
Pilates Instructor: Claire trained with Body Control Pilates in London, the leading Pilates organisation in Europe.
She is a member of the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs). This register is a national standard governing the teaching of exercise in the UK.
Claire is a qualified mat work teacher and has also trained in small Pilates equipment such as the overball and toning circle.
She is currently training to become a specialist level 4 instructor in low back pain.
Claire also has a special interest in working with both ante and post natal clients.

Lynsey Hetherington BSc (Hons) Pod, MSc

Lynsey graduated from the University of Salford with BSc (Hons) in Podiatric medicine in 2001 and was employed by the university of Salford as a degree level tutor. In 2002 she joined Warrington PCT as the Clinical Lead for Biomechanics, during which Lynsey completed her MSc in Clinical Biomechanics of the lower limb, with dissertations relating to biomechanics of figure skating and of the knee joint. Whilst working at Warrington PCT Lynsey gained significant experience in Paediatrics High Risk Footcare alongside her biomechanics case load.
In 2008, Lynsey moved to the North East to advance her career in Biomechanics. Through the musculoskeletal service in North Tees and Hartlepool Foundation Trust, Lynsey continues to work with Orthopaedic assessment, paediatrics and sports related podiatry. Having set up a gait analysis lab within the musculoskeletal service, Lynsey presented gait analysis to the Teeside Sports Symposium. In 2010 Lynsey joined Newcastle Sports Injury Clinic bringing this experience to the team, along with her experience in running and passion for trekking.

Gill Love BSc (Hons) Pod
Gill trained at New College Durham, graduating in 2010. She is a member of the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists and has a particular interest in the treatment of musculoskeletal problems. Gill has a personal interest in ballet, contemporary dance and tae-kwondo.
