Karen Dearden Grad Dip Phys MCSP OCPPP

Karen Dearden: Clinic Director

Karen graduated in 1989 from Newcastle upon Tyne, after which she worked at Newcastle General Hospital, a large teaching hospital.  Karen specialised in Sports Injury Medicine and Musculo-Skeletal Physiotherapy in 1991.

Karen has worked with professional, amateur and recreational athletes. She has been team physiotherapist for Durham County Cricket Club, Newcastle Eagles Basketball team and the Newcastle Elite swimming squad.  She has also been involved with Newcastle United Football Team and the Newcastle Falcons rugby team.  Over the years she has worked in elite hockey and assisted various international and olympic athletes. Karen also had a part-time lecturing post at Newcastle College working with the Sports Therapy and massage students.  She has also advised athletes, coaches and school children on issues surrounding physical preparation and injury.

Karen's work in occupational health includes the assessment and treatment of occupational injuries and their prevention.  She has lectured at the North East Occupational Health Conference and to employers and employees around the region. Karen is a member of the Organisation of Chartered Physiotherapists in Occupational Health and Ergonomics.

Karen has attended many post graduate courses and enjoys treating a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions that are seen at the clinic.

Angela Power MSc BSc (Hons) MCSP MSOM

Angela Power: Lead Physiotherapist

Angela qualified at Salford University in 2000. During her career to date Angela has worked within by the NHS and the private sector specialising in musculoskeletal conditions. Previously working in an Accident and Emergency department Angela developed an interest in acute conditions, particularly low back pain and traumatic injuries.

Angela has also worked in orthopaedic settings, treating patients with conditions such as anterior cruciate ligament injuries / repair, total knee / hip replacements and general osteoarthritis. Angela has also gained membership of the Society of Orthopaedic Medicine and an MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice (Musculoskeletal Studies).

Angela has a personal interest in most sports, but particularly cricket, football and golf and has also worked in cricket and non-league football providing pitch side treatment for players.

Joanne Shields BSc (Hons) MCSP

Joanne Shields: Senior Physiotherapist

Joanne graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University in 2003. During her career she has worked within both the NHS and private sector specialising in musculoskeletal conditions.

Through her experience working on both trauma and elective orthopaedic wards, and also various out-patient environments, Joanne has developed a keen interest in post-surgery rehabilitation. Other areas of interest include shoulder rehabilitation and lower limb biomechanical problems.

Having trained in dance of various styles from an early age and progressing to study dance she has a good understanding of the relationship between dance technique and injury. At the Newcastle Sports Injury Clinic, Joanne is working closely with local dance groups, professional companies touring in the region and through links with Dance City provides a screening service for dancers at elite level.

Joanne’s personal interests include a wide variety of sports having spent some time previously working with the sports development team of her local council. She is a keen netball player and competes regularly in the Tyne and Wear ladies league.

Chris Barrett BSc (Hons) MCSP

Chris Barrett: Senior Physiotherapist

Having graduated in 1998 with a BSc (Hons) in Sports Science from the University of Teesside, Chris went on to complete a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy in 2001. Chris has since worked with various sporting groups completing a range of duties. Initially he worked extremely closely with the Great Britain Canoe Slalom Team acting as technical coach, sports science advisor and physiotherapist to elite athletes.

After graduating Chris worked in a large teaching hospital treating patients with acute and chronic conditions. During this time he initiated an MSc in Sports Physiotherapy.

Whilst working at the Newcastle Sports Injury Clinic, Chris has been involved in a number of elite sporting events including the Nissan Qash qui Challenge (elite freestyle mountain biking) and the Caledonian Challenge (endurance running event). Chris has a wide interest in sport and elite performance; this is particularly the case for running, road cycling and whitewater canoeing.

Steven Veitch BSc (Hons) MCSP MSOM

Steven Veitch:  Senior Physiotherapist

Steve graduated at the University of Teesside in 2002.  He has worked in a variety of settings within the musculoskeletal field in both the public and private sectors.  Steve has gained extensive experience in the management of both acute and chronic spinal conditions as well as working with a wide variety of sports injuries and work related disorders. 

Steve has worked with elite athletes at local league and non-league football clubs working at the pitch side level through to end stage sport specific rehabilitation. 

Steve also has a particular interest in golf on a personal level and has managed a wide range of acute and chronic golf related injuries.

Steve Oliver DIP AC MBACC

Steve Oliver: Acupuncturist

Steve graduated from the Northern College Of Acupuncture in York.  Steve is a member of the British Acupuncture Council (www.acupuncture.org.uk) and has a special interest in herbal formulae and acupuncture.  In addition to acupuncture, he qualified as a practitioner and instructor in tai chi and qi gong.

Susan Madderson BSc (Hons) PGDipAc MBAcC

Susan Maderson: Acupuncturist

Susan studied traditional acupuncture, completing a 4 year course at the Northern College of Acupuncture in York.  She is a member of the British Acupuncture Council and also has qualifications in massage, reflexology and reiki.

Karen Harvey

Karen Harvey: Massage Therapist

Karen trained at Newcastle College and began working at the Newcastle Sports Injury Clinic in October 1997.  She has worked with the Newcastle Basket Ball Team, the Canadian Squash Team and Newcastle’s Elite Swimming Team.  She has also attended National Swimming Competitions and the 2000 Olympic Swimming Trials.  Karen’s main interest is working with athletes.

Jakki Green

Jakki Green: Pilates Instructor

Jakki studied pilates at the body Control Academy in London and qualified in 2004.  She is qualified to advance instructor level and is accreditated with the new government national standard and is a member of the Exercise Professionals.  Since qualification Jakki has run classess and taught privately throughout the North East.

Sandra Anderson BSc (Hons) Pod

Sandra trained at the University College School of Podiatry and Chiropody and obtained a Podiatry Honours degree.  She a full member of the Health Professions Council and also a member of the society of chiropody and podiatry.

Complementary Therapy


Nick Hudis MA(Hons) DipCH MURHP DipTuina

Nick trained in herbal medicine with Michael Tierra and East West College of Herbalism.  He trained in Tuina Massage with Bodyharmonics Centre and completed further study of herbs and massage in Nan Jing, China.  He is also qualified to teach Qigong and Tai Chi.  As well as practising, he teaches and lectures in his subjects in both UK and Ireland.  Nick has special interest in gynaecological, reproductive and endocrine disorders and chronic fatigue.
